1862 Typical Die Clash TDC-3C-1862-01
Error
Description
Documented by MadDieClashes as TDC-3C-1862-01, this typical die clash was identified on the 1862 Silver Three Cent Piece — one of the smallest and most delicate denominations ever produced by the United States Mint. Die clashing occurs when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without an intervening planchet, and on a coin measuring only 14mm in diameter, the resulting transferred impressions are compressed into an extremely small area, making detection both challenging and rewarding. The Silver Three Cent Piece (also known as a "trime"), designed by James B. Longacre, features a six-pointed star on the obverse with a shield at center, and a Roman numeral III within a large C-shaped ornament on the reverse. Philadelphia struck Silver Three Cent Pieces in 1862 during the early years of the Civil War, a period when silver coins were being hoarded extensively and disappearing from circulation — a crisis that would lead to the introduction of fractional currency and, ultimately, smaller-denomination base metal coinage. The 1862 mintage of approximately 343,000 pieces for the Type III design (1859-1873) reflects the diminishing production of this denomination as it approached obsolescence. Clash marks on such a miniature coin require particularly careful examination, as the small diameter concentrates both the primary design elements and the transferred clash impressions into a condensed area where overlapping details can be difficult to separate. The "typical" designation confirms the dies clashed in their normal aligned orientation. Collectors should examine this variety under at least 20x magnification with strong oblique lighting, as the diminutive coin size makes lower magnification insufficient for resolving the faint clash impressions against the already fine design elements of Longacre's star-and-III composition.
