Description

Judd-274, Pollock-322, is a proof cent pattern struck during the first year of the Civil War. This pattern uses the regular 1861 Indian Head cent dies but was struck in an experimental alloy or with special attention to proof quality. The Indian Head cent design by James B. Longacre had been in production since 1859, and by 1861 the oak wreath reverse with shield was in its second year. The outbreak of war in April 1861 disrupted normal Mint operations and began the process of hoarding that would eventually drive all coinage from circulation. Pattern production continued during 1861 under newly appointed Mint Director James Pollock, though on a reduced scale compared to the prolific pattern output of the late 1850s.
