Description
Judd-302, Pollock-354, is a proof cent pattern struck in bronze alloy during 1863. This pattern is historically significant because bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) would be adopted as the standard cent composition the following year. The bronze alloy offered several advantages over copper-nickel: lower cost, easier striking, and a more attractive appearance that developed an appealing patina over time. This pattern represents one of the earliest demonstrations that bronze was a viable cent material, providing tangible evidence to support the composition change that would be authorized by the Coinage Act of April 22, 1864.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7. Approximately 5-10 specimens known. Historically important as a precursor to the bronze cent adopted in 1864.
