Description
Judd-271, Pollock-318, is one of the most valuable pattern coins ever sold at auction, realizing $1.14 million. This proof half eagle pattern features an experimental design struck in gold, representing the Philadelphia Mint's exploration of potential new designs for the five-dollar denomination during 1860. The obverse carries a variation of the Liberty Head design that had been standard on half eagles since 1839, while the reverse tested a new arrangement of the heraldic eagle motif. Gold patterns of this era are exceptionally rare because the precious metal content made them valuable even as bullion, and most were carefully preserved by the collectors and officials who received them.
