Description
Judd-301, Pollock-353, is a proof cent pattern struck in copper during 1863. The use of pure copper rather than the standard copper-nickel alloy of regular cents indicates this was a metallurgical experiment testing the softer metal's suitability for cent production. Pure copper patterns struck with proof finish typically display exceptional detail, as the softer metal flows more readily into the die recesses during striking. The warm reddish-brown tones of a copper cent pattern differ markedly from the pale yellow-gray of the standard copper-nickel alloy, giving these pieces a distinctive visual character.
