Description

Judd-279, Pollock-325, is the third variety in the 1861 GOD OUR TRUST half dollar pattern series (J-277 through J-280), documenting the Mint's systematic exploration of motto placement on the Seated Liberty half dollar design. The obverse carries the standard Seated Liberty figure with thirteen stars and the date 1861, while the reverse features the heraldic eagle with the experimental motto GOD OUR TRUST incorporated into the design. The specific placement or presentation of the motto on J-279 differs from both J-277/J-278 and the subsequent J-280, demonstrating that the Mint tested multiple configurations before settling on a preferred arrangement. The motto might appear in different positions relative to the eagle — above the eagle, on a banner held by the eagle, within the field below UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, or worked into the periphery. Each placement offered different aesthetic and practical trade-offs in terms of legibility, visual balance, and die durability. These 1861 motto patterns occupy a unique position in American numismatic history. Struck during the first year of the Civil War, they reflect the widespread sentiment that the national crisis was divine punishment and that acknowledging God on the coinage might restore moral authority. The Reverend M.R. Watkinson's famous letter to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase in November 1861 urged recognition of "the Almighty God in some form on our coins," and Chase responded by directing the Mint to prepare designs. The eventual motto IN GOD WE TRUST, first appearing on the 1864 two-cent piece, differed from the GOD OUR TRUST tested on these patterns, making them fascinating evidence of the wording alternatives considered.
