1861 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-278, Bronzed Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This bronzed restrike of Judd-278 was produced after the original proof strikings, featuring a chemically treated copper surface that gives the piece a dark brown, semi-matte appearance. Bronzed restrikes were produced at the Philadelphia Mint for sale to collectors, often years after the original die combinations were first used. The bronzing process involved applying a chemical solution to the copper surface that created an attractive dark patina resistant to further toning. These restrikes served the collector market's demand for pattern varieties while generating revenue for the Mint. The copper composition and bronzed finish distinguish this piece from the original silver proof strikings.
Rarity Notes
