Description
The 1847 (O) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was struck at the New Orleans Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 124,000, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 64% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Four-mint production (Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans) marks peak antebellum quarter eagle activity. The New Orleans Mint operated from 1838 to 1909, producing coins valued for their Southern historical provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $1.0K to $20K depending on grade and condition.
