Description
The 1847 (O) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 124,000, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 64% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Four-mint production (Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans) marks peak antebellum quarter eagle activity. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance.
