A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, the 1847 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 15,784, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 8% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Four-mint production (Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans) marks peak antebellum quarter eagle activity. Coined at the Dahlonega Mint, a small Georgia facility that produced gold coins from local deposits for just 23 years before the Civil War.
