Description
The 1847 (C) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, struck at the Charlotte Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 collection. The Charlotte Mint struck 23,226 quarter eagles dated 1847. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Quarter eagles were struck at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans. Charlotte's North Carolina mint operated from 1838 to 1861, striking gold coins from regional deposits. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7745.
