Description
The 1847 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 29,814, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 15% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Four-mint production (Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans) marks peak antebellum quarter eagle activity. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.0K to $15K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7744.
