About This Coin
The 1847 cent was the first coin made for the Kingdom of Hawaii: 100,000 copper pieces ordered in 1846 through James Jackson Jarves and designed by Edward Hulseman, with Kamehameha III on one side and HAPA HANERI in a wreath on the other. It was unpopular, largely because the king's portrait was poorly done. Breen named the Attleboro, Massachusetts mint of H. M. & E. I. Richards as the maker. Medcalf and Russell sort the cents by the plain or crosslet 4 of the date and the number of berries in the wreath.
