Description

The 1838 Gobrecht Dollar - J-84 Restrike is a proof dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Gobrecht Dollars (1836-1839) series. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right without stars and the reverse displays an eagle in flight amid a field of stars. A small number of patterns and restrikes were produced. The 1838 is distinguished by starless obverse variations and the flying eagle in a starry field. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Estimated market value is approximately $43K. Struck in other, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #11352.
