Description
The 1838 Gobrecht Dollar - J-84 Restrike is a proof dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Gobrecht Dollars (1836-1839) series. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right, with 13 stars around her, and the reverse displays an eagle in flight in a field without stars. A small number of patterns and restrikes were produced. For 1838 the stars moved to the obverse, 13 of them, the reverse field was left plain and Gobrecht's name was dropped. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #11352. Reference data: struck in silver with a reeded edge, rated R-5. Catalogued as Judd-84, Pollock-93, A/W 65, Taxay EP107. alignment III and IV in later die state than originals.
