Description

The 1836 Gobrecht Dollar - Alignment II & IV is a proof dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Gobrecht Dollars (1836-1839) series. With a mintage of 600, this is an extremely rare issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right without stars and the reverse displays an eagle in flight amid a field of stars. First year of the Gobrecht Dollar. Original strikings have the eagle flying level (Name on Base) in a plain field. Approximately 1,000 were struck for circulation. The eagle design was later adapted for the Flying Eagle Cent. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value is approximately $93K. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 39 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #11226.
