Description
The 1839 Gobrecht Dollar - Original is a proof dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Gobrecht Dollars (1836-1839) series. The Mint delivered 300 Gobrecht dollars dated 1839 on December 31, 1839, and most of them went into circulation. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right, with 13 stars around her, and the reverse displays an eagle in flight in a field without stars. The final Gobrecht Dollars were struck, transitioning to the standard Seated Liberty Dollar in 1840. Restrikes were later made from the same dies, in alignments III and IV. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 39 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #11444.
