About This Coin
The 1838 Gobrecht Dollar is a United States dollar from the Gobrecht Dollars (1836-1839) series — the second year of the series. In 1838, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right without stars and the reverse displays an eagle in flight amid a field of stars. A small number of patterns and restrikes were produced. The 1838 is distinguished by starless obverse variations and the flying eagle in a starry field. Struck in other. Estimated market value across variants is approximately $43K. A notable auction result reached $150K in PR65 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by Christian Gobrecht.
