Description

Judd-71 is an 1836 Gobrecht dollar pattern representing one of the rarer die alignment and metal combinations in the Gobrecht dollar series. The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's celebrated Seated Liberty design with Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole with a Liberty cap, "C. GOBRECHT F." on the base, and the date 1836 below. The reverse displays the iconic flying eagle in a field of 26 stars, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" around the periphery. The 1836 Gobrecht dollar patterns exist in numerous die alignment and edge combinations cataloged from J-58 through J-71, each representing a different configuration of obverse-reverse orientation, edge treatment, and striking status (original versus restrike). The J-71 variety is among the scarcest of these configurations. These patterns were produced during one of the most innovative periods at the Philadelphia Mint, as Gobrecht's designs fundamentally transformed American coinage.
