Description

This restrike of the 1836 gold dollar pattern shares the Judd-67 designation (Pollock-70, R.5) with the original gold striking, but was produced at a later date for the collector market. The design is identical: a Liberty cap surrounded by rays of glory on the obverse, with the denomination 1 D. within a palm frond, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the date 1836 on the reverse. Christian Gobrecht is credited with both sides of the design. Restrikes of the Judd-67 gold dollar pattern were produced alongside the broader series of Gobrecht-era cabinet coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the 1860s and 1870s. The cap-and-rays motif, drawn from contemporary Mexican coinage traditions, represents one of the earliest American experiments with a gold dollar format — a denomination that would not enter regular production until 1849. Specimens may appear in compositions other than the original gold, reflecting the restrike-era practice of striking patterns in various metals.
