1836 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-66, Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Cataloged as Judd-66, this copper restrike is the off-metal companion to the silver Judd-65, combining the "Name On Base" obverse with the starless reverse. Struck in copper with a plain edge, this piece rounds out the series of 1836-dated Gobrecht dollar restrikes in both compositions. The Name On Base obverse retains the original die configuration where Christian Gobrecht's signature appears prominently on the rock beneath the Seated Liberty figure. Paired with the later starless reverse — a die introduced for the 1838 production run — this copper striking exemplifies the cabinet coin restrikes that the Mint produced to satisfy collector demand. The full matrix of 1836 Gobrecht dollar restrikes encompasses all possible combinations of two obverse dies (Name On Base and Name Below Base), two reverse dies (starry and starless fields), and two compositions (silver and copper), resulting in eight distinct varieties that are avidly pursued by pattern specialists.
