Description
Designated Judd-65, this silver restrike features the "Name On Base" obverse — the original 1836 die configuration with C. GOBRECHT F. on the rock — combined with the starless reverse. Struck in silver with a plain edge. This variety represents another historically impossible die combination, pairing the earliest Gobrecht dollar obverse (Name On Base, 1836) with the later starless reverse introduced for the 1838-1839 issues. The starless reverse shows the Flying Eagle soaring through a clean field, in contrast to the 26-star field of the original 1836 reverse. Two die states have been documented for this variety, reflecting progressive deterioration of the dies through the restrike production period. As with other Gobrecht dollar cabinet coins, these pieces were produced at the Philadelphia Mint for sale to collectors during the 1860s and 1870s.
