1836 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-64, Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Cataloged as Judd-64, this copper restrike pairs the "Name Below Base" obverse of the 1836 Gobrecht dollar with the starless reverse. Struck in copper with a plain edge, this piece is the off-metal companion to the silver Judd-63 variety. Like its silver counterpart, this copper striking combines an 1836-dated obverse with a reverse die that was not introduced until 1838, creating a historically anachronistic pairing characteristic of the Mint's restrike production for collectors. The Name Below Base obverse shows Gobrecht's signature moved to a less visible position beneath the rock on which Liberty is seated. These copper impressions were produced as cabinet coins, primarily during the 1859-1860 and 1869-1874 restrike periods documented in the 1887 Mint Report.
