Description

Nearly two centuries old, this 1835 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent in the Large 8, Stars die variety carries the earliest cataloged pre-cud for its date — a rim-area die crack that had not yet advanced far enough to detach a fragment and form a full cud. PC-1c-1835-01 documents the fracture on a coin struck from hand-operated screw presses at the Philadelphia Mint, where each blow delivered uneven force across the die face and accelerated crack propagation along weak points. The "Large 8, Stars" designation identifies the specific obverse die by the size of the 8 digit in the date and the arrangement of the surrounding stars, distinguishing it from the companion Small 8 variety also produced that year. Robert Scot's Matron Head design, refined by John Reich, gave these early copper cents a bold, classical appearance that contrasted with the crude production technology of the era. Pre-cuds on early copper are prized because surviving examples document die deterioration on coins that were never intended for collector preservation. Pure copper composition.
