Description
The 1835 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - Large 8, Stars was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a cent in the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. With a mintage of 3.9 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy and the rise of the common man, as new branch mints opened in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $38 to $1.4K depending on grade and condition.
