1835 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - Head of 1836 - PC-1c-1835-01 Pre-Cud

Description

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the Jacksonian era, this pre-cud on an 1835 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent captures a developing rim crack that could one day have become a full cud — the precursor stage where the die has cracked but the enclosed piece is still part of the die and has not moved. When a rim section fully detaches, the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce the raised featureless mass characteristic of a complete cud. Pre-cuds preserve the fracture in progress, showing the crack line across the rim before catastrophic failure occurs. Cuds on Coins lists the coin under 1835 without naming the head style; the 1835 cents were struck with both the older Head of 1834 and the Head of 1836. These large copper cents — weighing approximately 10.89 grams at 28.5mm diameter — were hand-fed into screw presses, and the mechanical forces of striking pure copper planchets generated significant die stress.
