Description

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the Jacksonian era, this pre-cud on an 1835 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent captures the developing rim crack that would eventually become a full cud — the precursor stage where the die has fractured but the broken piece has not yet separated. When a rim section fully detaches, the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce the raised featureless mass characteristic of a complete cud. Pre-cuds preserve the fracture in progress, showing the crack line across the rim before catastrophic failure occurs. The parent coin belongs to the Head of 1836 die variety within the Modified Matron Head series struck from 1835 to 1839, distinguished by specific portrait details that differ from the earlier Matron Head design. These large copper cents — weighing approximately 10.89 grams at 28.5mm diameter — were hand-fed into screw presses, and the mechanical forces of striking pure copper planchets generated significant die stress.
