The 1835 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent Base is a United States cent from the Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1835-1839 series — the first year of the series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 3,878,400 cents dated 1835, the Head of 1834 coins of the Matron Head series and the Head of 1836 coins together. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy; Congress authorized branch mints at Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans in 1835, and they opened in 1838. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, after Robert Scot's Matron Head.
