Description

The 1819 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - 9/8 Large Date is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. Total mintage reached 2.7 million. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Designed by Robert Scot. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1603. The Matron Head (or Coronet) large cent represented the next evolution in cent design, produced during the "Era of Good Feelings" through the presidency of Andrew Jackson. Common by large cent standards but still collected avidly. Many die varieties exist, cataloged in the Newcomb reference system.
