The 1794 Talbot Allum & Lee - Lettered Edge Proof Cent is filed under Talbot, Allum & Lee Tokens in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. Talbot, Allum & Lee, New York merchants in the India trade at 241 Pearl Street, put cents dated 1794 and 1795 into circulation; Crosby quotes Bushnell that the dies were cut at Birmingham and that the firm lasted from 1794 to 1796. The tokens show a ship with the firm's name and, on the reverse, Liberty beside a bale of goods with LIBERTY & COMMERCE. Crosby found four obverse and two reverse dies for 1794, one reverse without NEW YORK, an edge reading PAYABLE AT THE STORE OF on the 1794 pieces and WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE CENT on the 1795, and only one pair of dies for 1795. PCGS lists it as #637.
