Coin Details
Description
The 1791 Washington President - Large Eagle Proof Cent is filed under Cent (1791) in the Washington Pieces (1783-1800) series. The Large Eagle and Small Eagle cents of 1791 were made in England; Baker credits them to Hancock, a Birmingham engraver, and thought they were patterns for an American copper coinage. Both show Washington in uniform with WASHINGTON PRESIDENT and carry the edge UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The Large Eagle reverse has ONE CENT above a heraldic eagle holding a ribbon; the Small Eagle reverse has an eagle with raised wings under an arch of clouds, with ONE CENT above and the date below. Baker also notes an impression in brass. It is catalogued as Baker-15.
