Description
A silver medal cataloged as Baker-1829, dated 1788 and associated with the Washington Monument Association. This medal combines a Washington commemorative theme with the institutional purpose of the Washington Monument Association, one of several organizations that raised funds for monuments honoring the first president during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The 1788 date may reference the year of the Constitution's ratification or serve as a historical date on a later-produced medal. The obverse features a portrait of Washington, while the reverse relates to the Monument Association's mission. Silver strikings of association medals are significantly rarer than their base metal counterparts, as they were typically reserved for officers, major donors, or presentation purposes. This piece bridges the categories of Washingtonia numismatics and organizational medallics. Silver, medium format.
Rarity Notes
Rare in silver. Association medals in precious metals are scarce survivors of institutional fundraising efforts.
