Description

A fascinating muling dated 1785 that combines an Immunis Columbia obverse die with a 1786-dated Confederatio large stars reverse, creating a dual-dated coin. This is an overdate variety — the 1785 date was punched over a die originally dated 1786. In the early U.S. Mint, dies were expensive to produce, so rather than discard a die engraved with the previous year's date, Mint workers would punch the new date digits over the old ones. The traces of the original date remain visible under magnification, creating a die variety prized by collectors and cataloged by die variety specialists. The Immunis Columbia obverse shows a seated figure representing America with the legend IMMUNIS COLUMBIA, while the reverse displays the CONFEDERATIO legend with large stars and the date 1786. This die combination bridges two important experimental series.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. A significant muling connecting the Immunis Columbia and Confederatio series.
