Walking Liberty: The Most Beautiful American Coin?
A Design So Good They Brought It Back for Bullion
Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty Half Dollar is widely regarded as the most beautiful coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint. Liberty strides confidently toward the sunrise, draped in the American flag, carrying branches of laurel and oak symbolizing civil and military glory. The design was so iconic that the U.S. Mint revived it in 1986 for the American Silver Eagle — where it continues today.

But half dollars have a rich design history beyond Walking Liberty. John Reich's Capped Bust Half Dollar (1807-1839) is one of the most variety-rich series in numismatics, with hundreds of die marriages cataloged in the Overton reference system. The Franklin Half Dollar (1948-1963) sparked debate about the tiny eagle on the reverse — legally required but artistically criticized. And the Kennedy Half Dollar, rushed into production weeks after the 1963 assassination, was hoarded by a mourning public.
The half dollar is the only denomination that has essentially vanished from everyday commerce while still being produced. Since 2002, Kennedy halves have been made only for collectors.
What Do You Think?
- Walking Liberty, Kennedy, Franklin, or Barber — which half dollar design is your favorite?
- Do you collect Overton die varieties on Capped Bust halves?
- Full Bell Lines on Franklin halves — the ultimate grading challenge?
- Will the half dollar ever return to circulation, or is it a collector-only denomination now?
