The Enduring Liberty Half Dollar: Breaking Down the 2026 Semiquincentennial Half Dollar Design
Lady Liberty Returns to the Half Dollar After 79 Years
The 2026 Enduring Liberty Half Dollar marks the first time Lady Liberty has appeared on a circulating U.S. half dollar since 1947, when the Walking Liberty design (1916-1947) was replaced by the Kennedy half dollar. The return is symbolically significant — and the design consciously bridges the past and future.

Obverse: The Statue of Liberty
The obverse features the Statue of Liberty in profile, her steadfast gaze directed outward — as if looking toward the next 250 years. This is not the full-figure, striding Liberty of the Walking Liberty half, but an intimate portrait emphasizing resolve and endurance.
Designer: Donna Weaver (Artistic Infusion Program, former U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver)
Sculptor: John P. McGraw (U.S. Mint Medallic Artist)
Reverse: Passing the Torch
Liberty passes her torch to a new generation, the flame trailing with the momentum of purpose. This image — the literal passing of a torch — captures the theme of "enduring" liberty: freedom that has survived 250 years and is being entrusted to those who come next.
Designer: Beth Zaiken (Artistic Infusion Program)
Sculptor: Darla Jackson (U.S. Mint Medallic Artist)
The Walking Liberty Connection

The Kennedy Half Dollar (shown: 2024) has been the half dollar design since 1964. View in catalog.
The Walking Liberty half dollar (1916-1947), designed by Adolph A. Weinman, is widely considered the most beautiful coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint. Its design was so admired that it was chosen for the American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986.
The Enduring Liberty Half Dollar doesn't attempt to replicate the Walking Liberty — it offers its own interpretation. Where Walking Liberty showed a full-figure Liberty striding confidently toward the dawn, Enduring Liberty focuses on the moment of intergenerational transfer. Both designs use Liberty as an allegory rather than a portrait of a specific person.
