Tips for Submitting Great Error Listings

Help Build the NumisDex Error Catalog

NumisDex's error catalog grows through community submissions. Whether you've found a dramatic doubled die or a subtle RPM, sharing it helps build the most comprehensive error reference on the web. Here are tips for creating great error listings.

Photography Is Everything

  • Show the error clearly: Crop and zoom to the diagnostic feature. A full-coin shot is nice for context, but the error detail shot is what matters for verification.
  • Directional lighting: Most errors photograph best under strong light at a low angle. Die clashes, trail dies, and doubled dies all benefit from raking light that creates shadows in the doubled areas.
  • Both sides: Always photograph obverse and reverse, even if the error is only on one side. The opposite side helps verify the die pair and die state.
  • Edge photos for collar errors: If you're submitting a broadstrike, collar break, or other edge-related error, photograph the edge too.

Identification Details Matter

  • Include the year, mint mark, and denomination
  • Reference the attribution number if known (Wexler, CONECA, VAM, etc.)
  • Describe the die state — early, mid, or late
  • Note any additional errors on the same coin

The Verification Process

Submitted listings go through community voting before being verified. Clear photos and accurate descriptions speed up the process. The more diagnostic detail you provide, the faster the community can confirm your attribution.

Discussion

  • What's your camera/lighting setup for error coin photography?
  • What reference resources do you use for attributing errors before submission?
  • Have you submitted listings to NumisDex? How was the experience?
  • What error types do you think are underrepresented in the catalog?
