Designated "NL" (Not Listed) in the Fuld catalog, this token falls outside the standard numbering system for Civil War store cards. Struck in copper, the standard metal for Civil War tokens chosen because cent-sized copper pieces passed as substitute federal cents in everyday commerce. Although undated, this token was manufactured during the 1862-1864 period when private tokens circulated as emergency currency. These privately manufactured tokens served as emergency coinage when federal cents disappeared from commerce due to wartime hoarding. Estimates of Civil War token output run from 25 million (Fuld) to about 50 million (CWTS), struck before Congress banned private tokens in 1864.
