Description

This copper-nickel patriotic envelope Civil War token from 1860-65 is cataloged as Fuld 670A-1do and was issued by J.B. Schiller of Louisiana (Fuld city code 670). The "do" suffix indicates a copper-nickel composition with a specific die state or overstrike characteristic. Louisiana tokens from the Civil War era are among the rarest in the Fuld catalog, as the state was under Confederate control for much of the war and Union-issued emergency currency was largely confined to areas under federal military occupation, particularly New Orleans after its capture by Admiral Farragut in April 1862. J.B. Schiller's token represents the commercial activity that continued in occupied Louisiana despite the war. New Orleans, as the South's largest city and most important port, maintained significant commercial operations under Union occupation, and merchants needed circulating media just as their Northern counterparts did. The copper-nickel composition indicates this piece was produced to resemble federal small coinage as closely as possible. Louisiana Civil War tokens are prized by collectors for their rarity and for the historical context they provide about daily life and commerce in the occupied South during a period when normal financial systems were severely disrupted.

Rarity Notes

Fuld 670A-1do is rare. Louisiana Civil War tokens are among the scarcest state attributions in the series, especially in copper-nickel composition.
