Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Civil War token cataloged as Fuld LU-C-1a, featuring a Latin inscription. This token carries a Location Unknown "LU" Fuld designation, indicating a specific issuer in an unidentified location. Produced in 1864, the twilight of the Civil War token era. By year's end, new federal bronze cents and fractional currency had largely replaced private tokens in commerce. Die sinkers produced these tokens on hand-operated screw presses capable of striking several hundred pieces per hour. The largest manufacturers maintained multiple presses to meet wartime demand. Civil War tokens circulated freely throughout the Northern states from mid-1862 through 1864. Die sinkers in major cities competed fiercely for merchant orders, offering stock reverses that could be paired with custom obverse dies featuring the merchant's name and business information. Merchants accepted them alongside genuine federal cents, and many show heavy wear from commerce.
Rarity Notes
Copper strikings are generally the most common metal variant for Civil War store cards, as copper was the standard planchet material mimicking the federal cent. With 1 cataloged varieties, Consulere was a limited producer of Civil War tokens.
