Description
Stockman & Co., based in Memphis, Tennessee, produced this token as a cent substitute during the wartime coin shortage. Tennessee was divided during the Civil War. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. The dies for merchant tokens were usually cut by professional die sinkers. Private tokens entered circulation after the suspension of specie payments in late 1861 drained small change from commerce. Estimates of Civil War token output run from 25 million (Fuld) to about 50 million (CWTS), struck before Congress banned private tokens in 1864.
