Description

This brass Civil War store card, cataloged as Fuld 600A-9b, was issued by Cossitt Hill & Co. of Tennessee. Tennessee Civil War tokens are significantly scarcer than those from northern states, as the Confederate state had less access to the private minting facilities concentrated in the North. The brass composition further distinguishes this piece from the more common copper strikings. Cossitt Hill & Co. operated in a state deeply divided by the war — eastern Tennessee was strongly Unionist while the western and central portions supported the Confederacy. Commerce in Tennessee during 1861-1864 was disrupted not only by coinage shortages but also by military operations, occupation, and the fundamental economic dislocation caused by the war. Tennessee store cards document the attempts of merchants to maintain normal business operations amid extraordinary circumstances.
