1860 Token F-600E-9a Copper PE Steamer Lancaster TN
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This copper Civil War store card, cataloged as Fuld 600E-9a, features the Steamer Lancaster imagery, issued from Tennessee. The appearance of the same Steamer Lancaster design on both Ohio and Tennessee tokens (see also Fuld 165FX-a/9a) indicates that common reverse dies were shared among token manufacturers and paired with different merchant obverses for clients in various states. This die-sharing practice was standard in the Civil War token industry, where a handful of die sinkers — primarily in Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia — produced the vast majority of tokens for merchants across the country. The Tennessee provenance adds scarcity and historical interest, as Confederate-state tokens are far less common than those from Union states. The copper composition is standard for the period.
