Description

This undated bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 25-OO, is notable for lacking a date — unusual in the Vernon medal series where most pieces carry 1739 or 1740. The PBvi 25-OO die pairing features obverse die 25, the second-highest in the PBvi obverse sequence, paired with double-letter reverse OO. The absence of a date indicates the die sinker chose not to include one — whether to extend the medal's commercial life beyond a single year or because the dies were cut hastily without the date punch. The PBvi 25 obverse combined with the OO reverse places this among the very latest productions in the PBvi subgroup. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this undated variety provides an interesting complement to the dated pieces, raising questions about when and why certain medals omitted the date that was otherwise standard. Collectors note undated Vernon medals as a distinct subcategory within each Adams-Chao subgroup.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Undated PBvi varieties with very high die numbers are among the scarcest in the Vernon series.
