Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 10-K, enters the double-digit obverse die numbers in the Vernon Portrait and Icons series. Obverse die 10 paired with reverse die K creates a variety from the later phase of PBvi production. The double-digit obverse count underscores the extraordinary volume of die cutting that the Vernon medal craze generated. Each obverse die was hand-engraved using steel punches for letters and hand-cut tools for portraits and icons, requiring a full day or more of skilled labor. The investment in ten or more obverse dies for a single subgroup demonstrates the profitability of the Vernon medal market. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal belongs to the period when the initial frenzy of Porto Bello celebration had settled into sustained commercial production. The K reverse pairs with this advanced obverse to create one of the later-phase PBvi varieties.
Rarity Notes
Scarce to rare. Double-digit obverse die numbers typically indicate smaller production runs.
