Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvi 11-P, shares obverse die 11 with the PBvi 11-N variety but pairs it with a different reverse die P. This die-sharing demonstrates the multiplicative effect that made the PBvi subgroup so extensive — each obverse die could be paired with multiple reverses, and each reverse with multiple obverses. The P reverse die carries imagery that complements or contrasts with the N reverse, offering collectors distinct visual presentations of the Porto Bello narrative. The existence of two or more reverse pairings for obverse 11 indicates this particular obverse portrait was popular enough to warrant continued production with fresh reverse dies. Struck in copper alloy (AE), both the 11-N and 11-P varieties would have been sold alongside each other, appealing to customers who wanted different versions of an attractive obverse design. Die-sharing analysis is one of the most productive methods for understanding the Vernon medal production network.
Rarity Notes
Scarce to rare. An alternate reverse pairing for the PBvi 11 obverse die.
