CU-1c-1883-01R Rim Cud
Error
Description
First and only documented reverse cud on the 1883 Indian Head Cent, CU-1c-1883-01R preserves the evidence of a catastrophic die rim failure where a fragment of the reverse die broke away completely, creating a void that filled with metal during striking. The resulting raised featureless mass at the coin's edge — the hallmark of a full cud — obliterates whatever portion of James Barton Longacre's oak wreath and shield reverse occupied that rim section. Full cuds represent the terminal stage in a progressive failure sequence: first a die crack develops at the rim, then the crack widens into a pre-cud as the fracture deepens, followed by a retained cud if the fragment loosens but stays in place, and finally a full cud when complete separation occurs. The 1883 Indian Head Cent was produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of approximately 45.6 million, sufficient to consume numerous die pairs across the year's production. A single documented reverse cud for this date indicates either that rim failures were uncommon among 1883 dies, or that additional examples await discovery among unexamined specimens. The Indian Head Cent design, in continuous production since 1859, had been manufactured for twenty-four years by 1883, and die preparation techniques were well established for this familiar type. The bronze composition adopted in 1864 provided consistent striking characteristics, and the forces involved in producing the Indian Head Cent's moderate relief were generally well within the die steel's endurance capacity. This lone reverse cud represents an individual die's failure against those favorable mechanical conditions, making it an outlier worth documenting in the die variety record.
