(c.1950) Medal GW-09-US3 Silvered Bronze Washington Before Boston
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A silvered bronze Washington Before Boston medal struck circa 1950 at the United States Mint, cataloged as Musante GW-09-US3. This represents one of the later U.S. Mint productions of the iconic Comitia Americana medal, created during the mid-twentieth century when the Mint maintained its program of selling historical medal restrikes to collectors. The silvered bronze finish was achieved by applying a thin layer of silver wash over a bronze planchet, giving the appearance of a silver medal at reduced cost. The GW-09-US3 designation identifies the third U.S. Mint die pairing, following the earlier Paquet-era dies. The obverse shows Washington in military uniform with the Continental Congress dedication, and the reverse depicts the British evacuation of Boston Harbor. These mid-century Mint products are among the most accessible versions of this historically significant medal. Silvered bronze, approximately 68mm diameter.
Rarity Notes
