Description

A copper medal with reeded edge cataloged as Musante GW-163, produced circa 1841 from the second set of dies in the "Tyrant Alcohol" temperance series. These remarkable medals appropriated the image of George Washington for the temperance movement, one of the most powerful social reform movements of antebellum America. The obverse features Washington's portrait, leveraging his moral authority and reputation for personal discipline. The reverse carries the temperance message denouncing alcohol as a "tyrant," reflecting the evangelical fervor of the early temperance movement that culminated in numerous state prohibition laws. The "2nd Dies" designation indicates replacement dies were needed due to demand or die failure, suggesting significant production quantities. The reeded edge distinguishes this variety from plain edge specimens, providing an additional collecting distinction. Copper, medium format.

Rarity Notes

Uncommon. The second dies variety with reeded edge is a distinct collectible within the Tyrant Alcohol series.
