Description
A silver Washington Before Boston medal struck circa 1880-1898 from Paris Mint dies, cataloged as Musante GW-09-P3 and identified as the "Cornucopia" variety. The cornucopia designation refers to the Paris Mint's practice of placing a small cornucopia privy mark on medals struck at their facility, which serves as an authentication mark and helps date the production period. This late nineteenth century restrike was produced during a period when the Paris Mint continued to service collector demand for the Comitia Americana series, selling medals through dealers and directly to institutions. The obverse shows Washington's uniformed bust with the Continental Congress dedication, and the reverse depicts the Boston evacuation scene. The cornucopia privy mark distinguishes these late restrikes from earlier Paris productions and from U.S. Mint editions. Silver, approximately 68mm diameter.
Rarity Notes
Scarce in silver. Late Paris Mint restrikes with the cornucopia mark are identifiable and collectible as a distinct production era.
