Description
A silver Washington Before Boston medal struck circa 1845-1860 from Paris Mint dies, cataloged as Musante GW-09-P3 and known as the "Pointing Hand" variety. This distinctive designation refers to a specific characteristic of the reverse die where a pointing hand or directional element distinguishes this die pairing from others in the series. The obverse presents Washington's uniformed bust with the Comitia Americana dedication, while the reverse shows the familiar Boston evacuation scene with the distinguishing pointing hand feature. This mid-nineteenth century production period coincides with a peak in Washingtonia collecting and the Paris Mint's active program of restrike sales. Silver strikings were produced in smaller quantities than bronze editions, commanding premium prices even at the time of production. Silver, approximately 68mm diameter.
Rarity Notes
Rare in silver. The Pointing Hand die pairing is one of several identifiable Paris Mint restrike generations, with silver examples particularly scarce.
