Description

The 2025 (D) Althea Gibson Quarter is a quarter minted at the Denver Mint, within the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The Denver Mint struck 80,000,000 Althea Gibson quarters dated 2025. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. The reverse shows Althea Gibson standing beside the net on a tennis court, a racket in one hand and a ball in the other. Inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ALTHEA GIBSON, QUARTER DOLLAR and TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION. First African American to win a Grand Slam tennis title and compete at Wimbledon, breaking tennis's color barrier in the 1950s. Final year of the program, featuring Ida B. Wells, Dr. Vera Rubin, Stacey Park Milbern, Juliette Gordon Low, and Althea Gibson. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $1 depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #996583.
