CU-1C-2022-02 Cud
Error
Description
Second cataloged cud for the 2022 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent, designated CU-1C-2022-02. This variety joins the growing body of documented rim cuds on the Shield Cent design, which has been in production since 2010 and continues to generate die-failure varieties at the statistical rate expected for the denomination's high mintage. Each cud is unique to the die that produced it — the shape of the fracture, the clock position of the break, and the amount of design area affected all vary from one failed die to the next. What remains constant is the underlying cause: the hardened die steel, subjected to the repeated impact of pressing design into softer planchet metal at pressures exceeding forty tons, eventually develops cracks that propagate to the rim. The CudsOnCoins catalog system provides a standardized framework for documenting these breaks, assigning each verified variety a sequential number within its date and denomination. CU-1C-2022-02 represents the second confirmed rim break reported for the 2022 Philadelphia cent, following CU-1C-2022-01 as a separate die failure from a distinct working die.
