Description
This reverse cud is on the 2022 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. The CU-1C-2022-01R designation marks it as a reverse die failure — the "R" suffix. A cud forms when accumulated striking stress causes a section of the die rim to fracture and separate, and the void left behind fills with metal during subsequent strikes to produce a raised featureless mass. The 2022-P Lincoln Cent was struck in the standard copper-plated zinc composition that has been used since 1982, when the Mint transitioned from solid bronze to reduce production costs.
